Candle in the Window

Date Written 30th-31st December 2006

This is a tragic song that exploring the tarnished soul of a a man who has loved and lost ... at Christmas. Actually, on closer inspection, I think it's more likely about a man who has an obsessive compulsion with Princess Diana, even still ten years after her death.

Lyrics

Verse 1

I was searching for a real love light a fountain
Yet I found my quarry was just a soggy hole
Do you remember how we’d watch the Queen speak on TV?
And now her words cut through my soul

Bridge 1

Sitting by the fire when we would share our Christmas presents
But now the flame burns like the ghost of Christmas past

Chorus

But still I can see the fire of your eyes
As the children play in the snow
Like the candle in my window
Guiding you home

Tonight I will pray for all of us who
Will spend Christmas time on our own
There’s a candle in my window
Guiding you home

Verse 2

You touched my heart and showed me not to fear love
You found a safe path through the minefield of my soul
I keep so many of your pictures for reflection
But no amount of memories can make my life feel whole

Bridge 2

How you loved the turkey, the mulled wine, pulling crackers
But the jokes aren’t funny when there’s no-one there to hear

Chorus

Middle 8

Verse 3

I feel the biting wind on my cheek like on the street outside your window
The streetlights catch the snow now that our sun has set
My simple car felt like my modern day Verona
And your face my Juliet’s face

Bridge 3

But how could we have known that all we had could end so badly
Our fate was sewn the very day that we first met

Chorus (x2)
